Jason D. Engel, MD is a pioneer in the field of urologic robotic surgery. He was the first to successfully perform a robotic prostatectomy in the region and has since performed over 2000 such procedures, amongst the most of any surgeon in the mid-Atlantic. He has performed the largest series of robotic ureteral and bladder surgeries in the region. He routinely performs oncologic and reconstructive kidney and bladder procedures with robotic technology as well as complex urologic reconstruction. For enlarged prostate, Dr. Engel performs more in-office minimally invasive treatments than any other surgeon in Washington, D.C., and has been a key member of the kidney transplant team at Howard University Hospital. Dr. Engel has served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology and Director of Urologic Robotic Surgery and is the founder of the robotic prostatectomy program at George Washington University Hospital. He now serves as a clinical professional of urology at George Washington University. Through his research endeavors, Dr. Engel has become a foremost authority on sexual outcomes after prostatectomy. He is currently a principal investigator on two clinical trials, one involving bladder cancer recurrence and the other studying complications of hormone therapy in metastatic prostate cancer. His research has been quoted in the New York Times, and his publications and presentations have focused largely on prostatectomy outcomes such as the strong relationship between surgeon experience and cancer cure rates, methods to decrease positive margin rates, and erectile function and incontinence after prostatectomy. He has authored several book chapters on the topic of robotic surgery and published articles on complications of robotic prostatectomy, pseudoaneurysms of the urinary tract and ureteral surgery using robotic technology. A regular contributor in the media, Dr. Engel has appeared on FOX News, ABC News, WUSA-TV9, The Washington Times, the Washington Business Journal and PBS. He is consistently voted as a Top Doctor in Washingtonian Magazine and was the youngest Urologist ever given that honor. Dr. Engel received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Virginia. His medical degree was conferred with honors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and his post-graduate training was done at Northwestern University in the areas of Surgery and Urology. He is the managing partner of Urologic Surgeons of Washington, and you can learn more about him at www.dcurology.net.
