So back around late October of...

So back around late October of last year (2011), my 55 year old oil tank finally started to develop a leak and my oil company refused to give me any more oil until it was fixed. I went ahead and got an estimate for the tank, which was around $2000 and between that and the cost of oil versus gas, we decided to switch to gas... and in doing so modernize our system and get rid of the oil tank once and for all.

We met with Brian Gelber who was very helpful, gave us a few options, and we ended up using them to switch over to a brand new High Efficiency HTP Pioneer gas boiler. Not only did it come out wonderfully, but they got the parts and scheduled the conversion within 3 weeks so that I wouldn't have to worry about running out of heat in late November (remember, no more oil for the tank).

The job took two days, came out perfectly, and I couldn't be happer. The installers were professional, KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING (given all the electronics involved in a High Efficiency system), and friendly.

Although not a reflection on this company, switching over to gas has already saved me about $2000 this winter alone... pretty excited about that too.

Anyhow, recently the fan developed a minor issue, the tech guy came out, saw it needed a new fan, and since they didn't have one in stock he had the manufacturer express mail overnight a new one; he then came back to service the system the moment it arrived. Excellent Service.

Very disappointed. I had used them for 5 years for spring start-up, even addaded a Mitsubishi split with no problems. But needed emergency service recently called on Saturday did not call back for 3 days then tech came at 5 pm could not at first figure out problem then said I was low on Freon, waisted 5 lbs of Freon before realising it could be a leak, asked me for dish soap to check leak to finally say he could not fix it and had no more Freon. He told me he'd be back next day-no show. Called office and got an attitude from Lou who told me I would have to pay for waisted Freon plus new at $45/lb, the guy should have used a cheap inert gas to check for leak not $45/lb Freon. Really crappy all around experience, so I will not use them to fix and/or replace my unit. No longer recommend Stan Gelber & Sons.

We hired Stanley Gelber & Sons to replace the air conditioning unit in our house. To be fair our house has a complicated and old system. They installed a very large unit in our attic (it took up the entire width of the attic). When they installed the new AC unit they left some of our belongings behind the unit making it impossible for us to retrieve them. They left the job and we had no hot water. We called and they sent a crew who told us there were 5 wires and it seems that only 2 were connected properly. They spent another day in our house working on the wiring. After calling in a couple of technicians the wiring was supposedly fixed. A couple of days later our baseboard heating was randomly turning on (this was in the middle of the summer). After calling the company we were told someone would come in a week and that we may be billed if they find this to be a problem with the boiler. When the crew arrived they worked for about a half an hour. When we asked what the problem was we were told a valve was opened and now fixed. So we inquired further we found out that one of the technicians who fixed the hot water a few weeks earlier had “bumped into it and must have hit it opened.”

Now that the winter is here we tried to turn on the heat and had only cold air coming out. We hired another company to replace the boiler. When they came in to replace it they found that when the AC was installed the heating wiring was never wired back into the thermostat. We now have to pay this company to fix what Stanley Gelber & Sons messed up.

Do not use this company. They are incompetent and will likely leave your systems worse off than when you began.

This was a very strange and very out of date European system that was installed by another contractor decades ago. We spent many hours at no additional charge to the homeowner to interface their ancient boiler and controls to the new air handler in the attic. The boiler system was so old that parts are no longer available. We originally found the attic with a tremendous amount of junk and boxes and it was not very accessible for us to do the installation. This made the installation very difficult. The heating controls were not labeled by the other installer and we did leave the A/C system in working order. The reason the heating was not fully hooked up because the homeowner stated that they were going to have us complete the installation at a later date with a new boiler and do the proper wiring. If this was done they would have not had a problem and they were informed of this. They originally contracted us to do the A/C and we did do the install on an emergency basis for them at the busiest time of the summer.
