Cardiac Catheterization Lab The Cardiac Catheterization Lab enables a cardiologist to detect blocked arteries in heart attack victims or people experiencing heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain. In order to detect blocked arteries, a physician inserts a flexible catheter into the patient’s vein that supplies blood to the heart, usually through the leg. The catheter releases a dye into the arteries so they can be seen by X-ray. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab provides invasive diagnostic & therapeutic services, including angioplasty. During angioplasty, a tiny balloon is inserted into an artery to clear it of fatty deposits. Stents are inserted into an artery to prevent it from closing after bypass surgery or angioplasty. Temporary & permanent pacemakers are also implanted in the cath lab. Patient care is provided by an RN. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab is staffed Mon - Fri, 6am - 3:30pm A registered nurse, radiologic technologist & a scrub technician will be on call weekdays after 3:30pm, on weekends and holidays. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab provides coverage for emergency procedures 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. There are 4 procedure rooms and 18 pre and postprocedure rooms in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The rooms are to prepare patients for a procedure & where they return after a procedure to rest & recover before going home. Electrocardiogram’s (EKG’s) detect & diagnose heart abnormalities & generate a record of the electrical currents associated with heart muscle activity. EKGs are provided around the clock at DCH Regional Medical Center & STAT response for emergencies is provided. Echocardiograms use ultrasonic waves to visualize structural & functional abnormalities of the heart. They’re performed at DCH Regional Medical Center from 7am - 3:30pm in the Cardiology department, located on the 1st floor. Staff is on call 24 hrs a day for emergency procedures. STAT response is available for emergency situations. Echocardiograms are performed on patients of all ages with suspected cardiovascular disease, or who are scheduled to undergo a procedure in which a physician desires a baseline Echocardiogram.
