Providing healthcare should be simple. Its about patients seeking answers to basic and advanced medical problems in an environment where they can have open dialogue with a physician or nurse practitioner. Its where a scheduled appointment means that they wont have to wait for 45 minutes beyond their scheduled time to see their providera mutual respect for the time factor on both ends of the equation. And when that encounter does occur, your physician or nurse practitioner is actually concerned about what you have to saysomeone who takes the time to take a thorough history and get your thoughts on your illness/disease. That concept was embodied by doctor/professor and co-founder of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Sir William Osler (1849-1919) who stated, "Listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis." Healthcare is also about treating the individual patientnot a cookbook approach but an individualized, evidence-based approach using the most recent (and proven) methods of treatment. Osler spoke to such an approach"the good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease." Our combined experience and advanced training in Allergy, Immunology, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, and Contact Dermatitis allows us to provide comprehensive care to our patients with seasonal, environmental or food allergies, hives (urticaria), disorders of the immune system, lung diseases such as asthma, COPD (emphysema/chronic bronchitis), lung cancer, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease, and contact dermatitis due to allergens in the home (personal/laundry care products, jewelry, food additives) and/or work environment. Healthcare is also about educating the patient about the disease and the available treatment options. When it comes to symptom control and limiting disease progression, adherence is the most important factor. A patient who understands their disease and works together with their provider on designing the most effective, individualized treatment based on their preferences is most likely to remain adherent to their regimen. It should be an expectation that need not be stated but in todays fast-paced world is easily overlooked by many--respect, courtesy and compassion. It is an essential element of every encounter in our practice and is a cornerstone tenet of Mercer Allergy & Pulmonary Associates, LLC and The Center for Allergic & Occupational Contact Dermatitis. We thank you for the privilege and opportunity to be involved in caring for your healthcare needs.
