Prosthetics is the evaluation, fabrication and custom-fitting of artificial limbs to those who have experienced a limb amputation. There are a number of reasons why an amputation is necessary ranging from severe injury (such as motorcycle accident) to chronic tissue damage resulting from poor circulation. Statistically, most amputations are the result of peripheral artery disease in diabetics. In fact, the incidence of diabetes within all counties in our region of North Carolina is higher than the national average.
Orthotics is the branch of medicine that deals with the provision and use of artificial devices such as splints and braces.  The vast majority of patients requiring such devices have experienced a recent injury and are under the care of an orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist.
