Founded in 1938, Black River Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit electric cooperative that provides a range of energy services for the residents of Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee and Sumter counties in South Carolina. It works with a team of more athn 60 staff members. The cooperative covers over 3,400 miles of energized line. Black River Electric Cooperative provides Surge Guard devices, which is installed to protect electrical and electronic equipment, such as televisions, VCRs, personal computers, microwaves, home security systems, garage door openers, electronic thermostats, appliance motors from damage due to voltage surges caused by lightning.
