Therapy and counseling are a collaborative working relationship between the client and the therapist. During your first few sessions, your therapist will set goals for what you want to accomplish during therapy. The number and type of goals set depend largely on what you, the client, feel would be most helpful at this time. Your therapist will seek an understanding of you and your family’s needs, safety concerns, resources and presenting problems.

During the first 2-3 sessions, you and your therapist will create a formal treatment plan which outlines specific objectives and tasks to work through as a part of your therapy or counseling. Each client is given an individualized treatment plan that takes into consideration your individual needs. Types of therapeutic tasks include skill building, parent coaching, homework assignments, diary cards, crisis stabilization, experiential tasks, and referral and advocacy to additional resources.

Therapy ends when both the client and the therapist agree that the goals of therapy have been met. At regular intervals, your therapist will check in with you on progress towards these goals in order to decide how best to serve your needs.
