Dr. Mahoney is originally from Michigan, where he obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in cellular and molecular biology. He subsequently attended the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduation, he continued at Johns Hopkins Hospital for his internship in the Osler Internal Medicine Program. Upon completion, he joined the neurology residency program at Johns Hopkins.
