I’m writing this letter to express my anger at you and your medical doctors that ruined my son, and our family’s lives and collective good spirits for over the past three and half years and for the future.
On June 10, 2010, I visited your office with my 16 year old son, which had an acne condition for the past month or so, for a second opinion. You can read your file, if you still have it, about the rest of what you and your medical doctors, specifically, Michael J. Sabat did to my son.
You started the Accutane treatment without really knowing how to prescribe it and in what dosage. You prescribed an incorrect amount of the drug; I believe either 40mg or 60mg, which should’ve been really at a 5mg to 20mg dosage. What you created was a nightmare to my son, my wife and our whole family. Within a week our son had severe body aches, severe oozing of postulates and swelling of the face. We kept going back to you, and you increased the dosage and said “to bring out the big guns”, not knowing what you were doing. With this drug, the less dosage the better; with increased dosage, the symptoms got worse, and our son had severe pain, not sleeping at night, all the bed sheets, clothes and everything else his body and face touched had blood all over for weeks. The postulates were oozing and not stopping, he was crying and we were all in shock as to what was happening. He had a fever and was in bed for weeks. Finally, in early August, 2010, we decided to see his general doctor and had to go to the emergency room at the Children’s Hospital. We received a referral to an academic dermatologist in San Diego’s Rady Children’s Specialists, Sheila F. Friedlander, M.D.
Dr. Sheila F. Friedlander determined that our son had obtained acne fulminans from the first visit she saw him and had to be treated over a long period of time with Accutane at a very low dosage. We had to travel to San Diego once a month for a few years. In addition, he was (and still) receiving monthly injections of steroids into his keloids scars all over his chest and entire back, which were the direct result of your prescribing the incorrect dosage of the drug. Basically, you misdiagnosed and mistreated our son. When he was coming to see you weekly, you had no idea what was happening, yet you did NOT refer him out.
You basically did not care about your patient.
