Forrest Tancer was hired in 1971 to plan and develop a vineyard. Before Tancer could complete the plan, the vineyard ownership changed hands. Barry and Audrey Sterling had searched for a winery site in Europe for seven years. Upon their return to the United States, they resumed their quest in Sonoma County, Calif. As Tancer showed them the Iron Horse vineyard, the Sterlings appreciated his desire to see Iron Horse developed into a premier California vineyard. Within a few weeks in 1976, the purchase was made and Forrest Tancer agreed to continue as vineyard manager. Two hundred forty-four acres of producing vines constitute the Iron Horse Estates consisting of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Merlot, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. Iron Horse Vineyards is proud to produce special Cuvees for some of America's top chefs and restaurants and be a staple at White House state dinners and events going back more than three administrations.
