Established in 1887, New Mexico School for the Deaf is a special education school providing educational and support services to deaf children and youth up to 22 years of age. It is located in Santa Fe, N.M., and also offers various early childhood services through its preschools in Albuquerque and Las Cruces in Mew Mexico. Its academic curriculum encompasses various traditional and elective subjects. Additionally, it offers a wide range of outreach programs, and residential, educational and recreational activities, such as athletics, clubs and life skills development programs. Through Step Hi program it offers family-centered early intervention services for babies, toddlers and young children. It additionally offers specialized services and facilities, including rehabilitation counseling, health centers, transportation and occupational, physical, speech and language therapies. The courses offered at the middle and high school level include English, mathematics, social studies, science, physical education, career, health, woodworking, basic computers, American Sign Language and arts. New Mexico School for the Deaf is approved by the Commission on Schools of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
