Seat weaving since 1980. As a young UCSB student in 1980, I was always interested in history and design. I had known of the old caning shop in the Flying A Movie Studios and wanted to meet the man who had been caning since the 1930s. I walked in and was fascinated by the chairs everywhere, and I never wanted to leave. Arleigh trained me to take over for him and his mother, as they were both becoming quite elderly. Chairs were stacked everywhere, and now chairs are stacked everywhere in my studio as well. I took in so much history of his caning business and Santa Barbara, and I was blessed to be able to take it into my studio. The stories that come in daily attached to so many different chairs are endless. I am a small shop, and I can only push out so much work; patience is always appreciated! Thirty-seven years and continuing on in this old tradition. Please contact me at [email protected] for any questions (pictures of chairs are always welcomed).

Where do I begin! After trying to find someone to restore these chairs for YEARS I brought them to Lynn dismantled and in shopping bags. I had worked on them, my son had worked on them, another restorer had them for a year and could not make progress. I told Lynn that they held incredible sentimental value in an email and she immediately responded and said “bring them over.” She took one look and said “don’t worry we can do this.” Her can do attitude, mastery of the weaving process, and empathy for my chair story…I will be forever grateful. Her confidence and warm hug told me she’d stop at nothing to make these chairs beautiful again. Lynn is a treasure and a master craftsperson. And she is an absolute lovely person through and through. From start to finish she stayed on top of the project, communicated where we were at, let me visit the chairs to see the progress, and kept my faith in her ability to get the job done. The finished product exceeded my expectations - so much so that there will be a cocktail party unveiling for these beauties next month to celebrate their journey and rebirth. Lynn you are exceptional - thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

I have kept these vintage chairs for over 30 years. The work that Lynne did was amazing. I could not believe she wad right here in Santa Barbara. The work is perfect and her suggestions for repair were right on. She is a patient artist. I have my chairs back and it is truly like welcoming old friends back into my home.

She's the Best

I have brought a couple of old chairs to Lynne over time, one requiring cane replacement and another requiring strengthening and repair. I just wish I had more chairs requiring Lynne's attention, as she is a remarkable and inspiring person, not to mention a master craftsperson. She has a wide range of skills and talents, and she makes you love chairs, if you didn't already. Lynne is a Santa Barbara jewel and her work is impeccable. Rush to Lynne!

Lynns Caning

Lynne just finished doing a World Class job of replacing all the worn out bindings on my hand made 17 foot birch bark canoe that I bought 30 years in Northern Minnesota. The original boat builder told me that unless I could find an old time master wood canoe builder or a really excellent Caning expert there was little hope to save my canoe.
After searching for over a year for either someone from the Santa Barbara Yacht Club highly recommended I call Lynnes Caning and ask her to take on the project which I did. With very specific directions and the highly specialized binding materials from the original boat builder in Minnesota Lynne masterfully sewed my canoe back together and gave it a new life.
Im sincerely greatful for Lynne having the courage and confidence to take on this difficult task having never done anything like this before.
For anyone looking for a genuine difference maker craftsman Lynne Caning is the real deal!
