The Fillmore Center is the wor...

The Fillmore Center is the worst building I've ever lived in. The building manager, accountant and leasing agents perversely seemed to take pleasure in behaving as unethically and unpleasantly as humanly possible.

Some lowlights of my horrific one-year experience living at The Fillmore Center:

-Dog poop in the hallway for several weeks. I'm not sure if it was ever cleaned or if it just naturally disintegrated into thin air.

-"Resident services" lost my packages multiple times without ever offering an explanation or apology. One time they simply told me to call Amazon and ask them to re-ship my order.

-Loud fire alarms went off several times a month, usually after midnight, and continued ringing for 30 to 45 minutes each time before the fire department arrived to shut the alarms off.

-Other residents of the building seemed mentally ill. They caused loud disturbances in the hallways and courtyard at all hours of the night. They threw glass bottles off the roof on more than one occasion.

-The Fillmore Center borders one of the most unsafe neighborhoods in SF. I was threatened by an individual loitering outside with a large group less than 2 blocks from the building. While walking home with my girlfriend and carrying a pizza on a weekday afternoon, he told me "you're lucky I'm not hungry right now."

-The maintenance guy acted like I was grossly inconveniencing him when I called to request a repair to my washer/drier within my first week of living there.

-The Fillmore Center is apparently a designated Section 8 housing unit. An elderly lady moved in down the hall from me and boasted that her rent was only $300/month. My studio had the same size and layout and was almost $1600/month. This woman also mentioned that she was homeless before moving in to our building and, while she was a sweetheart, would regularly knock on my door to ask for money and food and to borrow my cell phone.

-I caught a younger homeless woman taking a dump in the stairwell late one night. To her credit, she appeared to be disposing of it in a plastic baggie.

-Building maintenance seemed non-existent at times. Light fixtures were often hanging off the ceiling; the front door and exit from the parking garage were often broken. Trash littering the hallway and elevators seemed to be the accepted norm.

-Unpleasant personalities throughout the staff with the exception of security personnel.

-Thin walls allowed me to hear neighbors and every single person who walked by my door.

-Extremely shady billing practices which took substantial time and energy to clarify and rectify with the building's accountant. Expect to pay much more than the advertised monthly rent, and don't expect to ever see your security deposit again.

Bottom-line: if you like being treated like garbage and want to live in a building that's also treated like garbage, The Fillmore Center might be your dream home.
