La Casa de las Madres is the first domestic violence shelter for women and their children in San Francisco. It is a nonprofit organization that educates, promotes awareness and changes the community s and media s perceptions about domestic violence and its victims. The center provides expert intervention and prevention services to more than 10,000 community members annually. La Casa de las Madres offers emergency residential shelter and community-based services to women, teenagers and their children, as well as advocacy, counseling, family-based and referral services. It operates a drop-in counseling center and 24-hour crisis phone lines. The center additionally provides a variety of teen and community education and outreach programs.
