Amy Leu, DO, is a board-certified family medicine doctor who specializes in sports medicine. Her expertise includes diagnosing, treating and preventing injuries associated with athletics, including acute and stress fractures, sprains and overuse injuries. She also provides primary care for patients of all ages, including preventive care and treatment of acute and chronic diseases.As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Leu has a whole-body approach to medicine. She is highly experienced in manual medicine techniques to diagnose and treat restrictions in the body that contribute to pain and disease. Within sports medicine, Dr. Leu has a special interest in biomechanics, functional movement and injury prevention. She also enjoys providing care for the female, adolescent and pediatric population. Dr. Leu is a team physician for the San Marcos High School Knights and the Miramar College Jets. She has provided medical coverage for many athletic events and teams including UC San Diego Intercollegiate and Club Sports, the Rock n Roll Marathon and the Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton football. She has also served as the medical director for the California State Games, an amateur youth competition involving 5,000 athletes in 20 sports. As a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Leu instructs medical students, residents and fellows. She also serves as the assistant program director of the Sports Fellowship Program at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her clinical research work includes a prospective study evaluating the usefulness of the tuning fork as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of tibial stress fractures, and a study involving the use of the Functional Movement Screen in conjunction with corrective exercises for injury prevention. While working at Camp Pendleton, she developed her specific interest in biomechanics and functional movement as a treatment approach. Prior to joining UC San Diego, Dr. Leu spent three years as a primary care sports medicine provider for active duty Marines training at Camp Pendleton at the 52 Area Sports Medicine and Reconditioning Team Clinic. She completed her residency training in family medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine, where she was chief resident. Dr. Leu completed her fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She earned her doctorate of osteopathy at Touro University California in Vallejo, Calif. She is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine.Dr. Leu is a fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice, a distinction that recognizes her outstanding achievement in family medicine. Dr. Leu first became interested in sports medicine as a young athlete. She was a multi-sport athlete in high school and went on to become a team captain on the UC San Diego womens basketball team her senior year. Outside of work, she stays active by participating in triathlons, half marathons and surfing.
