I contracted Southeastern Marine Power to survey my engines and to repair findings. In both cases, the initial bill was 30% higher than quoted estimate. They said the survey quote did not include travel, and they did not have good explanation for the repairs. We subsequently agreed to 15% increase over quote for the repairs. The repairs were not completed properly. They missed fuel leaks, used wrong oil in transmissions (per operating manual that came with transmissions), and left a leak on a transmission hose. Overall, their errors cost me over $2,000 because of the need to get work done in other locations, with long wait times for parts. They reimbursed me a little over $600.

Thank you for your comments. We apologize for the miscommunication concerning your pricing. We thought our email communications were sufficiently understood, evidently, they were not. We are committed to do a better job of communicating quotes in the future. Our engine inspections identified failures that were occurring at a point in time. We repaired all issues observed during a two and ½ hour sea trial. Once these repairs were completed, we ran the engines for about an hour without issue. Our tech, knowing you were about to embark on the Great Loop Adventure, was meticulous in his effort to spot additional leaks. We cannot predict future failures. Nor can we warranty your 29-year-old engines against future failures. In an effort to address some of your issues, we gave you a $640 refund. We also wrote off a $389 repair order for travel and cleanup of a subsequently occurring fuel leak. This fuel leak was caused by a solenoid that cracked after the completion of our repairs. Had it been cracked during the sea trial or the hour long running test, fuel would have been all over the engine room. We have shown you, by copy of Twin Disc documentation, that the oil we used in your transmissions is an approved blend. We are sorry you remain unsatisfied with our services. We feel we did everything we could to give you a good start on your way and wish you well on your Great Loop Adventure.
