The Saint Paul Port Authority, an industrial redevelopment corporation, uses creative, effective and financially sound methods and ideas to expand the tax base and create quality job opportunities. It is a public corporation, created by legislative order in 1929, and founded in 1932, to manage commerce in and along the Mississippi River. Specifically, the Port was charged with developing a navigable channel as well as overseeing riverfront commerce and river-oriented industries. While it maintains its historic roots in promoting commerce along the Mississippi River, it also strives to create livable wage jobs. Whether it is cleaning up polluted land, providing expansion financing or job training, the Port fulfills its mission for Saint Paul. Riverview Industrial Center, built in 1962, was the Port s first redevelopment project, with 17 more to follow. The Port may, after public input, create development districts within its area of jurisdiction and make public improvements. It also can acquire and lease or sell land and buildings for industrial and other economic uses.
