I am a experianced lab tech been drawing for over 11rs in a pediactric setting & Trauma ICU setting.. I have many years of experiance & I have never been so up set with a goup of phlebotomist in all my years of mangaement.... I took my 15mon old to get a tube of blood drawn with the exceptation they would use good technique & commen sense. I was saddly mistaken!! They drew all the adults in the room even though I was signed up 35 minutes before they appeared. So upon beginning I didn't see the phlebotomist wash her hands or foam in before touching my child, I asked to her to please clean her hand before beginning the procedure, she said ok & rolled her eyes. Then she did fine when asking to verify the patient names, DOB ect. But as she palpates for a vein I notice she was pulling out a 21G vacutainer and tube... I questioned her about a 23G butterfly needle she replied we are out.



This is the point where she should re-evaluated her options on the procedures and protocol's as a CPT. Given the diameter of the childs vessels, age & her experiance. She should have never to attempt using this size gage on a small fasting toddler. Unless it was a life threatening event or situation. Instead she tells me she has been very experianced at drawing with this gage and vacuatiner.. I tolder one try & no corrective technique. She agreeded. So as I assumed she thrusted and no flash.. I said ok,... no blind poking.. please pull out. She then said oh, one more if I could just,.. I said just stop..! I pulled the tornique and applied pressure to my baby girls injection site. She was screaming in pain as the pheb said she pull the bevel of the 21g needle up beneath the surface of my babys are.... She later blamed the child for the miss.. this is not the 1st time I have been to this la and all three of the phlebs are rude & don't want to consider the facts nor follow state protocol. in order to pass the state lab test you have to be educated in all age, illness gender This location should go back and refresh on child or Pedi draws!!!!





IF you have kids under 15 I don't reccommend this lab location! They are rude, non-experianced & don't except thier faults or mistakes it will always be the patients fault they don't use commen sense!
