Think Twice Before Trying

I have been a patient at Oakwood Women's Center for several years. I've stuck around because of the occasional positives that I see and because I believe that one visit isn't always representative of the quality of the office, but now I'm reconsidering.

On my first visit in my late teens, I told my doctor that I was virgin. She pressed me several times, asking if that was really true. I found that embarrassing and offensive!

I have also been put off by the rude behavior and inattentiveness of several of the receptionists.

I took an afternoon off work for my most recent visit and got a call last minute saying that my doctor had to cancel. To the center's credit, they worked with me to put me with another doctor so that I wouldn't have to lose more work time. I was appreciative and had a great experience with Dr. Maunder. I also felt hopeful about a new prescription that I decided to try.

When I went to the pharmacy the following day, my prescription had not been called in. I called the after-hours line and was connected to a doctor who seemed incredibly irritated that I had called. He informed me that my problem was not an emergency and that my drugs would work as well if I started on Monday as if I did that day.

As a teacher, I believe I understand the incredible demands that can be placed on those in service professions. At the same time, I take professional pride in doing whatever I can for those who need my help, even if I am inconvenienced, and particularly if my organization is at fault. I always try to bear in mind that I am dealing with human lives and that my attitudes and actions carry significant weight.

No, my call was not a "medical emergency," but I didn't realize that attempting to get my medicine would be so irritating and offensive to a doctor. The condescending, dismissive, and callous way I was treated did not at all match Oakwood Women's Center's motto of "compassionate health care." Kindness and understanding would have made such a difference in my life at that point.

I definitely deserve better than Oakwood Women's Center seems ready to give.
