At McIntyre Builders we are very serious about energy efficiency. However to design for energy efficiency it first must be understood how the house works as a system. There are no independent elements in your homes design, there are many separate features that individually impact the performance of the system as a whole. The home system begins at the foundation and includes the exterior walls, ceiling and roof systems, all of which make up the perimeter envelope. Also included are the water, heating and ventilation systems and the occupants themselves. As each of these elements are changed or improved it will impact other elements of the home and in many cases in an adverse way. For instance the homes perimeter can be sealed to a point at which the house is to air tight, at which time changes need to be made to the ventilation system to compensate. If not an environment is being created that will harbor stale odors, fumes and allergens in the home creating a unhealthy home. Another example is a home can be designed that provides an exterior air barrier over the sheeting (house wrap) with no interior vapor barrier or exterior thermal barrier. This provides an ideal environment for moisture to enter the walls from the interior and Condensate inside the wall creating an environment for mold growth. These are just two of many examples of how the system works together, at McIntyre Builders we have education in and a strong understanding of building science and incorporate many features that improve the energy performance of the home while considering the home as a system and maintaining a safe healthy environment.

I am totally satisfied with the quality of my home. The whole experience of building a house was almost fun with Arn and Kimberly. They both helped me through the decisions of making a home handicap accessible and still be the home I could be comfortable in right now. I also appreciate the care and concern to make sure everything is the way I want it, even after I have moved in.
I have told many of my friends and family that McIntyre Builders is the only builder I would use if I were to build another home.

We just moved into a custom-designed, custom-built house constructed by McIntyre Builders and are very happy with our new home. We first heard of McIntyre Builders many years ago when they sponsored the local PBS station's weekly airing of the "This Old House" show, and we later met Arn McIntyre at a green-building seminar he conducted for the Grand Rapids Home Builders' Association. About a dozen years later, we contacted Arn when we were looking at some lakefront property on which we'd hoped to build a retirement home. Arn and Kimberly's knowledge and experience in the areas of real estate, Department of Environmental Quality and other State and local regulations, engineering and design, and home construction prevented some potentially-disastrous mistakes for us in the property choice / purchase process. McIntyres then worked attentively and patiently with us to custom-design and build a house that meets our hopes for an energy-efficient, universal-design ("age-in-place"), beautiful home we hope to occupy for the rest of our lives. Throughout the home-building process (which is, naturally, complex and never problem-free), we found Arn to be very available (quick to return calls and emails, very conscientious about keeping us informed, etc.), involved, accommodating, and a great problem-solver. His education, experience, and expertise inspired confidence throughout the process. Whenever we made initial contacts with our materials suppliers or subcontractors, they all opened their conversations with us with the same remarks: "Oh, you'll be glad you're building with McIntyres. They really know what they're doing, they've been successful for a long time, and have a great reputation." In summary: they were right; we love our new house and, indeed, definitely ARE very glad we chose McIntyre Builders!

McIntyre Builders built my custom home last year. I was very pleased with the design and building process. My home features many custom rustic features and the designers captured what I was looking for and the workers made it a reality, its beautiful. In addition to that I have a very energy efficient home using considerably less gas than my old home and is very comfortable. From the very beginning with helping to find land all through the construction process McIntyre Builders made the process smooth and enjoyable.

A contractor you can trust

Arn, the owner of the business, explains the building process in detail.

Our experience with McIntyre Builders was positive from the get-go.

We had no surprises during the building process because all of the planning was done up front.
