Durango-McKinley Paper Company, located in Prewitt, N.M., produces paperboard for corrugated boxes. The company uses post-consumer recyclables to manufacture linerboard used for corrugated cardboard facing. It also produces the paperboard, medium, used as fluting between the two facing sheets of linerboard. Its plant accepts more than 700 tons of waste cardboard daily from commercial accounts, such as department stores and supermarkets, and residential curbside recycling. Durango McKinley has been a member of United States Environmental Protection Agency s National Environmental Performance Track since 2001. Its environmental accomplishments have been recognized by the New Mexico Environment Department through a Green Zia Award at the Excellence Level, one of only two ever awarded.
