Selecting a guardian is a major decision. If the family situation involves a high level of conflict or domestic violence, it is imperative that the guardian not only have a high level of knowledge of the impact of the situation on children, but be able to apply this knowledge appropriately. Many professionals claim to understand domestic violence but there are many who do not. Safety and well-being of the child must come first. A child's feelings must be respected and protected; a guardian must have knowledge of the legal system as well as a high level of knowledge of children. I would absolutely not use this guardian for family matters involving high conflict or divorce, which is usually the case when a guardian is necessary.
