I'm pleased to recommend A1 Auto Sales for being nice guys. I arranged to bring over a car that I was considering purchasing at Volunteers of America -- about a quarter mile down the street (actually, their competitor). For $20 the mechanic gave it a 10 minute inspection and road test and stated his opinion of the vehicle. He was very flexible in immediately making time for us because we were in a hurry to get back to work. I had also found another place a mile further that would do it for $20 but it was an oil change shop. This was a real mechanic. And for reference, another place a bit further wanted $60 and for me to leave it to do a complete inspection. So there you have perspective for comparison.
