The American Cancer Society is a community-based voluntary health organization. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., the society operates more than 3,500 offices throughout the United States. It offers services to individuals with cancer through various programs, including research, education, patient services, advocacy and rehabilitation. The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer in New York City. The society promotes cancer awareness activities at the local, state, regional, national and international levels. It develops various programs for prevention, early detection, treatment and survival of cancer patients. Its activities include providing grants to researchers, running public health advertising campaigns and organizing various projects, such as the Relay for Life, Great American Smokeout, Making Strides against Breast Cancer and Daffodil Days.
