Something Old, Something New.

Joe’s Country Kitchen is off CA’s 101 on the out skirts of Paso Robles. The meals are a mixture of traditional “County Home Cooking” type dishes and as stated in the menu, “Something from the South” meaning south of the border. The interior is a mixture as well. An old milkshake mixer circa 1950’s and the latest Samsung Flat screens adorn the painted brick interior. There’s an outside dining area with decorative shrubbery that’s fully shaded. If you want to dine outside, this is ideal for either the warmer days or when the cooling CA coast, sea breeze is just right. They do their own BBQ in a brick, wood-fired, rotisserie that’s used every Thursday after 11:00 for tri tip and chicken. It was the typical “Fish Friday” for my visit and I decided to go along with the traditional special. Not just for expedience, but I wanted to see how they did fish. Joe’s didn’t disappoint in the slightest. The special was an all you can eat fish but I only had room for one plate. In fact the portions were so large, I took the last 2 pieces to go. The fish was fried, battered, lake fish (Cod?) The waitress wasn’t sure of the type of fish. I ordered without fries which the nice lady got wrong. This turned out to be a happy accident as the fries also get a well-deserved compliment of being my favorite for the few times I indulge. They were the home-made shoestring type similar to “In & Out’s” (that’s an inside CA reference folks). One thing I got surprised with, was the clam chowder which I mistakenly assumed was included with the special. It wasn’t that much extra, but noticeable. My only disappointment is the lack of Wi-Fi. Joe’s is definitely on the list of my repeats.
