This school is a branch of Sok Ho Kang's Tae Kwon Do Academy in Charleston, WV. Grand Master Sok Ho Kang is a 9th degree black belt. He came to the United States from Seoul, Korea. In February 1970 he established his Tae Kwon Do Academy as an educational institution. The Academy has continuously taught thousands of people both young and old for over 40 years. Grand Master Kang has been actively involved in Tae Kwon Do all of his life. He is one of the most leading masters nationally and internationally. He is known as the Father of Tae Kwon Do in West Virginia.

Tae Kwon Do is an ancient Korean martial art. It is a form of self-defense which includes blocks and punches, while putting greater emphasis on kicking techniques. The translation for Tae Kwon Do is “the way of the hands and feet”. The Parkersburg Branch School of S. H. Kang’s Tae Kwon Do Association teaches traditional Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do. Students take part in many aspects of Tae Kwon Do. Forms are a major part of the martial art. A form is a set of moves choreographed in a way that resembles a defense against multiple opponents. The most recognized part of class is sparring or better known as free fighting. This helps the student to face their fears and the anxiety of an actual fight in a controlled setting. A more exciting component to training in Tae Kwon Do is board breaking. This is a fun way of testing one’s own technique and is often used for competition and demonstration. There are several benefits associated with this martial art, both expected and unexpected. Physical fitness benefits include balance, flexibility, weight control, speed and strength. Not so obvious mental benefits are gained as well. These include traits such as confidence, respect, lower stress levels and humility. Our goal at this school is to work within everyone’s limitations and help them to attain their own personal best. Above all, this school believes in promoting integrity, pride, loyalty, and discipline.

Tae Kwon Do has become my life. It is my journey, my passion. I found this school in the yellow pages. Thank goodness because I couldn't have had a better experience anywhere else. Just by chance this was the first school I tried and I didn't need to look any further. As an awkward, out of place, adolescent, they gave me everything I needed and more. I gained acceptance and they gained my trust. I gained friends and self confidence. They helped me discover myself. They gave me something to be proud of and a place to belong. I started almost two decades ago and couldn't imagine my life without it. They are very focused carrying on the Korean traditions of discipline, etiquette, loyalty, and rank system. The physical teachings are above and beyond. The level of excellence is prevalent. They are understanding of each individuals abilities and work to help everyone fill their true potential. Grand Master Kang is a strong leader with a clear vision and of the highest caliber of human beings. To train in his academy is to be a part of something greater than yourself. A school that allows you to learn Tae Kwon Do from a true traditional Korean Grand Master is not something easily found in today's market.

This branch is instructed by Master Randy Randolph, 6th degree black belt, who has trained over thirty years. He continues to pass on his passion for this traditional Korean martial art through his teachings. This school believes in promoting, integrity, pride, loyalty and discipline.
