We recently moved our sister from the CountryHouse in Omaha to the Independence House at Mandarin in Lincoln. In the 4 weeks that she was at CountryHouse we noticed a measureable decline in her emotional state and her physical abilities. Boredom was her worst enemy, and she developed several disconcerting behaviorisms during her short stay there. The move has made a world of difference for her. Only one week at Independence House and we are seeing dramatic improvements in her moods, and the behaviorisms are subsiding. Augmenting her daily routine with PT and OT, my sister is regaining her strength and is no longer restricted to her wheelchair (Yeah!). Kudos to the staff, whom we find engaging and endearing to the residents placed in their care. If you are searching for a memory care facility for a family member, donât be fooled by the appealing âbrick and mortarâ options out there â just because a place âlooksâ like home doesnât mean it âfeelsâ like home. Take the time to observe the staff and their interactions with the residents. Then ask yourself⦠would I want to live here? Thank you Independence House for making good on the promise touted on CountryHouseâs website⦠creating âmoments of joyâ for my sister and for all the residents in your facility.

I have had the unfortunate experience of having to place a family member with Alzheimer's in a memory care facility. I chose the CountryHouse in Omaha, NE based on a tour of the facility and the information posted on their website. I wish I had taken the time to visit the facility a number of times and observe the staff prior to admission. Much to my surprise I found the staff to be largely apathetic and indifferent toward the residents. A family member who has visited the CountryHouse on a frequent basis said it best when she reported to have seen "random acts of kindness" between the staff and the residents. Really?!! In a facility paid to care for our loved ones afflicted with an unforgiving disease that robs its victims of their past and future, that forces them to live in the moment relying only on their five senses to glean what little happiness they can; is it really acceptable that compassion is the exception rather than the rule?
