I want to make a note to tell others of our experience of buying from the IFA store in Ogden, Utah. My wife is very experienced with raising chickens and in growing things, and she had taught me many things in the last couple of years since I married her. My wife’s mother had a farm in Canada and they grew their own food and raised their own animals of all kinds including chickens for meat and eggs.

My wife came here to the US in 2011. We went to the IFA store in Ogden and bought a lot of seeds for growing in the spring of 2012. Many of the seeds we bought there, Did Not Grow. We felt we’d give them another try and this year 2013, we bought along with seeds, 18 chicks. (We knew that we might lose a few so we got extra). 9 Barred Rock types, and 9 Bantam types. We prepared a nice pen for them in our warm 72 degree house with heat lamps and rabbit fur lined nesting boxes, and also large running spaces, ect… as per my wife and her mother’s many years of shared experiences with raising chickens. We planned to keep them in our warm house until I got a nice coop built for them and until the weather got warmer.

Right away, within 2 days, 10 of the chicks Died. (All of the Bantams and 1 Barred Rock). We went to the store and the best they would do was sell us some new ones at Half Price.

We noticed a number of things wrong with the chickens and other animals that they sell there. 1) Many of the animals for sale are crammed into tiny cages, living on top of each other. 2) Many of the chicks are made available for sale at IFA when as little as 2 days old. (My wife and her mother both say that this is not enough time for them to be taught by their natural mothers even how to eat. The chicks we bought didn’t know how to eat). 3) Some larger animals like rabbits are crammed into tiny cages that they can barely move around in. 3) The store cages are located right near the front door of the store where it is drafty. (This is important because the store sales person claimed that we let them get too cold, BS)!

Also who knows how long that these very young animals are left in cold drafty trucks waiting to be unloaded? I and my wife feel that this IFA store is recklessly participating in conjunction with some Large Corporate farms, to make a fast buck on animals that they know to be sick. With Zero regard for the well being of the animals or the hard earned money of their unsuspecting customers. We spent almost $40.00 on chicks that all died. We are not going to forget that. Currently we watching and caring for the remainder of them. We hope for the best and want to warn others about the IFA store in Ogden, Utah. We will not buy anything there again!
