I went today to adopt a cat. I was told that I could only adopt cats who had been declawed previously. The only cats fitting this description were two sadly nearly elderly male cats who had been declawed. I wanted a female cat about a year or so old. I told them that I would not get the cat declawed if I adopted her. They told me it was against their policy and that I needed to go home and think about. They said that I could not take home a cat today; unless, it was one of the elderly male declawed cats. I have had cats for over twenty years. My last cat died sadly last year from old age. He was eighteen. I, unfortunately, had to have my cats declawed because of the apartment requirements to have a cat. Maybe, I did not know the horrors of having a cat declawed. What I do know is that they were very rude, very insensitive, and very unwilling to realize that I adopted a cat I would not have it declawed. They kept saying it was against their policy. It should also be noted that nowhere on their adoption application was any indication that past declawing of cats or possible declawing of cats was reason for refusing adoption. Nor would they accept that maybe if adopting the cat meant no declawing her; then, I would not declaw her. Their attitude was one of bigotry and resistance. If you declawed her in the past; then you will declaw this cat you adopt. Past behavior does not predict future behavior; especially when enlightened. Needless to say I still have no feline companion to share my life with. All I have resentment towards the way I was treated. The biggest victim was not me. I will recover; but, the poor felines. Needless, I will take my business elsewhere and suggest that the residents of Catawba County boycott this place and work towards finding a kindler, gentler, more understanding place for pet adoption.
