The largest and most imposing of the twin-towered apartment buildings along Central Park West, the Beresford Apartments takes full advantage of its prominent site across from the American Museum of Natural History and New York City s Central Park. The apartment building was designed by architect Emery Roth and completed in 1929. At 22 stories and with huge facades facing both Central Park and Manhattan Square, The Beresford was the largest apartment building of its day. Italian Renaissance in design, the Beresford is executed in brick with limestone and terra cotta trim. Animating the walls is a distinctive blend of late-Renaissance sculpture featuring winged cherubs, angels, dolphins, rams' heads and rosettes. The Beresford Apartment s vast scale and dramatic profile make it one of the most important elements of the Central Park West skyline.
