New Canaan Country School is an independent school for beginners through grade nine. It was founded as the Community School in 1916. The school has an enrollment of more than 600 students and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1. It provides students and teachers access to educational resources and facilities, including online libraries, an audiovisual center and multimedia laboratory, art studios, music classrooms, a fully equipped wood-working shop, modern science labs, a professional auditorium, gymnasiums, playing fields and a nature center. It offers classes in English, art, science, language arts, literature, math, cooking and social studies. Its academic program is supplemented by offerings in art, music, singing, dramatics, creative dance, woodworking, computers and daily athletics. The school was recognized by the Department of Education as a national exemplary Blue Ribbon school for excellence in education.
