Bought a car from them many moons ago, they refused to hand off the title once it was paid off. They lost my business and respect for life. But they're really chummy with people that help them rip other people off. DONT EVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!!!

So my daughter had her car towed by Thorntons. Thorntons was called in to tow it, which they did and that is fine as they performed the service they were asked to. The fee for towing was $120 and $28 for the days it took us to get the car. That seems like a fair price. So based on all that I wouldn’t even bother putting out a post. Where I do have a problem with Thorntons is their customer service. Very rude and gruff and are VERY reluctant to give me the name of who I am talking to. Thorntons also requires the registered owner to pick up the car, which is their rule and not a requirement by law. So my daughter, who has the same last name as I do and is the only one in the area, who has the keys and whose purse with all her documentation was actually in the car, couldn’t get it. Instead I had to get a sign notarized and MAILED, with a copy of my ID to them to release the car. I can understand the need to reasonably assure that cars are given back to the correct person, but that process was just silly in this case as common sense should have ruled as it does with most businesses. Also, the fact that all the power is in someones hands on if you get property back doesnt not give them the right to be rude about it and make it as if you are imposing on them to get you vehicle.

I was unlawfully towed from my own residential lot on a weekend. This company preys on upper class and once they have your car they have no reason to be polite...they make all the rules. If you are a private business who allows them to tow from your lot think carefully about the association that a horrible company like this has on your business!

Thornton's Auto Repair located at 11240 Jefferson Ave Newport News, VA 23601 is conducting predatory towing tactics. They towed my daughter's car from a parking lot that was only established as a "Tow Zone" 72 hours earlier and on a Sunday. After learning her car was towed, she went to pick up her car within 3 hours of being towed and had to wait 3 days to get it back. Vic Thornton and the boys at Thornton's advised her of Thornton's New Towing Policy - only registered owners can get a vehicle out, even if their official Virginia State Drivers License matches the car's registration. It took 3 days to get the vehicle out of Thornton's, costing over $200. If you get towed by Thornton's in Newport News, watch out. They will milk you for every dime to make a buck. They prey on college students, active military and their dependents.

Thornton's Tow threatened us and illegally towed our vehicle! Their customer service is poor, they used profanity and became defensive and argumentative when questioned about their reasonings of towing our vehicle. I am appalled and disgusted that they service the citizens of Newport News and surrounding cities. They illegally tow vehicles to make a profit! Who regulates them? They overcharge people by illegally storing towed vehicles and not being available to citizens to pick up their vehicles. We can put an end to this by reporting them to DMV and Better Business Bureau regarding their business and towing license.
