The growing number of homelessness, which jumped by 11 percent in 2008, has thrown some assistance agencies for a loop. The largest increases are in rural areas as well as suburban communities. 1 in 3 Michigan families are impacted by domestic violence. 77% of women in prisons or jails are single mothers. These incarcerated women today will eventually be released tomorrow and will return to communities. The SecondBreak program will help ensure the transition women make from domestic violence, homelessness and prison back into our community a successful one. We started our program in January 2010, with the hope of making a difference by providing a safe and drug-free environment, that includes mentoring, and helping women become productive citizens. We try to deliver on these expectations every time.
