Consolidated Electric Cooperative is an electric distribution cooperative serving the energy needs of more than 15,000 members in eight counties of north central Ohio: Delaware, Franklin, Knox, Licking, Marion, Morrow, Richland, and Union counties. The company is a nonprofit cooperative, owned and controlled by the members it serves. Members have a voice in the operation and control of the cooperative through an elected Board of Trustees. Originally incorporated in 1936 as Delaware Rural Electric Cooperative and Morrow Electric Cooperative, in 1996 it merged to form Consolidated Electric Cooperative. Consolidated Electric is one of 24 electric cooperatives in Ohio. Together, it owns and operates a generation and transmission cooperative called Buckeye Power, that owns two of the three generating units in the Cardinal Generating Station located along the Ohio River near Steubenville, Ohio. These two coal-fired units provide 100 percent of the electricity required by all of the cooperative customers in Ohio, in conjunction with a natural gas-fired peaking generating unit in northwestern Ohio, which came online in 2002.
