Dive Bar Hidden in a Coffee Shop

Tall Pines is one of those places that's always been there, and you've just never gone inside. It looks like it fell out of the 1930's from the outside. It's tiny on the outside, and just as small when you get inside.

We'd heard it was open late, and that they had good Menudo on weekends, and it was a basic beer place with a pool table before going in. For a moment, we though cool, a local place with beer and food that's open late.

Walking in the door after having driven past this place for 30 + years was an experience unto itself.

There it was, a beat up old formica bar counter with some stools, a pool table with two guys in cowboy hats shooting pool, a couple of worn out booth tables and two tvs on the walls. The "menu" was posted on the wall in mostly handwritten pages up where once there must have been a more costly menu sign.

The food was nothing to write home about. We had hoped for much better mexican food than what we got considering the Mexican/American mash-up flag on the wall, and most of the signage inside being in spanish. But, we got a rather bland carne asada burrito and enchiladas made with - wait for it - what appeared to be spaghetti sauce! The salsa wasn't much better. It was absolutely necessary to spike it with Tabasco.

At least the beer was ok. I don't think I could go back for the food at all. I might go for a beer if I really needed the local dive bar experience, but, there's a lot of other options which would likely win in a toss up.
