Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, founded in 1883, is a semi-autonomous independent body of the city government. It is responsible for maintaining and developing the Minneapolis Park system and providing services and recreation programs to city residents. The department preserves, protects, maintains, improve and enhance the city's parkland and recreational opportunities. It operates more than 40 recreational centers, ranging in size from one-room shelters to full-service facilities with meeting rooms, kitchens and gymnasiums. The recreation center offers a variety of programs, classes and special events to the state community. The department s youth sports division coordinates competitive interpark sports leagues in basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics, football and badminton. It also provides long- and- short-term strategic plans, for the master plans. The department involves customer service, building maintenance, small construction projects, irrigation maintenance, mowing, aeration, small and large equipment usage and ball field care.
