The Pennsylvania Turnpike carries more than 156 million vehicles a year. The turnpike is a major roadway in Pennsylvania connecting the greater Philadelphia area in the southeastern portion of the state to Pittsburgh and the Ohio border to the west. The roadway is a part of the nation s interstate highway system. The turnpike links on the west to the Ohio turnpike and on the east to the New Jersey Turnpike. The turnpike was first opened on October 1, 1940 and was loosely based on the German Autobahn and had no speed limit. The total turnpike system, including extensions, is now 528 miles.
