After four years of self-maint...

After four years of self-maintained locs, I decided to treat myself and get them done. My stylist, Tanika gave me five star treatment. She went over and beyond taking her time to give me the style I wanted. I paid for my best friend to have her hair done at Mocha City for her wedding and my oldest daughter has gotten her hair done there (age 10). They are so kid friendly. I have purchased soaps and natural products for my skin and hair from a boutique inside the salon. Did I mention there's a food bar? If you are looking for a place to relax and unwind, GO HERE. I luv this place!!

I went to have my natural hair...

I went to have my natural hair done at this salon due to not being able to really manage my hair due to a recent surgery. I was impressed with the website, and when I called, I was told Ms. Kitty (Hawkins) was the only available stylist and specialized in natural hair. During both visits, my hair was shampooed, but no conditioners were used. Having been a licenced cosmetologist, I repeatedtly reminded Ms. Kitty to comb through my hair to detangle it. My hair was twisted in a style using synthetic hair extentions, & I was pleased with the end result. I was told not to put any oil on my scalp in order to maintain the style. At the end of one week, my hair itched so much that I added an anti-itch cream to my scalp. I made it two weeks in order to not let the amount paid be in vain. I made another appointment with Ms. KIitty, and took my large tooth comb (used for natural hair) so that she could use it. I didn't want the same style but one that wouldn't have my head itching. Again, she had to be told several times to comb through my hair (which she didn't do). Her assistant who shampooed my hair decided to use my comb to detangle her own hair (after shampooing her hair then styling it in my presence). Ms. Kitty began on my hair and she really didn't know how she was going to style my hair by comments that she made as she worked. She twisted my hair (that had not been conditioned) extremely tight beginning at the hairline and working towards the center (without combing through) and placed a rubber band on each section to hold it in place. When she was done, there was a section in the middle that still hadn't been twisted and her assistant and she joked about me having a "mohawk". She grabbed hair extensions and made two braids from the nape area to the middle (catching the other parts that had been twisted into the braid). She then twisted my hair around the top. It had parts that were uneven, and it looked horrible when I saw what she had done in the mirror. It wouldn't have mattered had a fall, bun, or anything else been added. She told me that it would be nice with a fall or bun. She didn't have what she needed, and asked other cosmetologists for a fall or bun. I didn't like the bun she was given since it didn't match my hair color or texture. She told me I needed to drive her to the beauty supply store to help her pick a fall to go on my hair. The store didn't really have anything, but she talked me into a fall that was curly and not the same texture of my hair. She noticed a gentleman wearing a motorcycle helmet in the store. When we went out of the store, there were 4 motorcycles belonging to 4 men. Instead of going back to the salon so that she could finish my hair, she decided to stop outside smoke and talk about riding motorcycles with these men (20 minutes), and told me, "I will meet you at the salon!" I went to my car and sat for another 10 minutes, and she finally got in, & went back to the salon. When she was done placing the curly permed fall on my natural hair, IT LOOKED HORRIBLE! Several people who worked in the shop came in and looked at my style, and it was evident that they, too, really didn't like it. When I got home, my family commented negatively (but truthfully) as their sentiments were the same as mine. I took the fall off (since it didn't look right and it also made my hair itch). In addition, I took the hair down. I called to speak to Ms. Kitty Hawkins about my experience. She was unprofessional, and didn't offer to do anything to try to compensate me for her work which was tacky the last time that she rendered a service to me. It is for the aforementioned reasons that I would not recommend this salon (owned by her sister and of which she is the manager) or this sylist to anyone.
