Shanna M. Barton, M.D., joined Norton Children’s in August 2021 as a pediatric infectious diseases physician. In addition to her clinical role, she is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Barton completed her medical training, internal medicine and pediatrics residency training, and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship training at the University of Louisville. She earned a Master of Science in clinical investigative sciences also from UofL. Dr. Barton’s clinical roles include consulting on patients admitted to the general inpatient service, evaluating patients in the outpatient clinic, and participating in the multidisciplinary care of immunocompromised children, including solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant candidates and recipients at Norton Children’s Hospital. Primary interests of Dr. Barton’s include medical student and resident education, vaccine advocacy and the care of immunocompromised children. Her current research includes development of educational initiatives, designed to improve resident communication with vaccine-hesitant patients and families. Dr. Barton is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the PIDS Training Programs Committee. Initially, Dr. Barton intended to pursue veterinary training after graduation. Her strong passion for animals started during childhood.
