Essential

After taking a cycle of Andrew Wood's essentials course, I felt as though I had finally found the Acting Teacher who could help me realize my potential. What I appreciate about the course is just how challenging it is. Andrew will provide you with the tools and techniques to help you analyze a given scene and connect to the character. The REAL magic happens when you do the scene work and are able to put those tools to the test and see exactly how it all works. Andrew will help you along the way with insightful questions and comments to get you to reach a visceral level of performance, which is the goal.

If you respect and love Acting as a craft, and have an unquenchable passion for it, Andrew Wood Acting Studio would be my first recommendation. It is a no frills, no bull, MEATY ACTING CLASS. I am currently in my second cycle of the essentials course and look forward to taking more classes.

Took Andrew Wood's acting essentials class. It was a challenging class, but Andrew is a gifted teacher who really motivated me to excellence. Because I gained so much from his class, I have already re-enrolled for his next class.

Before I took his course, I told Andrew what I was looking for in my next acting class: 1) a workable technique; 2) a college-level curriculum; and 3) a safe learning place. When I took his class, I quickly discovered that his class met these objectives and more. Andrew integrated Stanislavsky and Yale School techniques into his class.

For me, the best classes occur when both the teacher and student work together. When one attends an acting class, the actor should come prepared, thereby getting the most benefit from class. In Andrew's class, I was expected to complete weekly reading assignments, to integrate class taught techniques into my weekly rehearsals and to be ready to perform my scene when called upon. When I performed my scene, Andrew would query me on my character and the scene. Since the play (that I was working on) required careful reading and analysis, I honestly felt this was difficult, but a very rewarding part of the scene study. In a nutshell, once we unlocked my character's critical characteristics and underlying objective, my scene work grew more natural and interesting to watch. Andrew guided me through the process. If there is one thing that I can say about Andrew, teaching and directing his students is not only his talent, but his crown jewel. Furthermore, I noted my fellow classmates were fully committed to do the work necessary to improve their acting.

And now for the icing on the cake....Several weeks into class, I was offered a role to play a doctor in an independent short film. To better prepare for the role, I used the practical techniques taught by Andrew and thereby, gained higher confidence in my acting.

In the past I have taken acting classes, while being a great help, didn't give me what I really needed and wanted out of a class. I wanted to dive into a scene. break it down, discover the character, discover things about the character inside the material. all i wanted i found in andrews class.

The initial meeting over coffee to discuss not only his expectations of the class but yours as well (i thought unorthodox at time) really put my mind at ease with the decision i had to make. No other class did that, and I liked it.

His passion for the craft encouraged me to constantly look for more about the character i was playing and made me feel free enough to make choices, right or wrong.

The reading assignments that are given is from material written by some of the greatest in the field of acting. Every week there was something new to read and something new to help piece together the work. Techniques that will be readily available when you need them.

I have taken one cycle of the class and already know that if you're new to acting or someone who wants to continue to create great work, I highly recommend Andrew Wood Acting Studio!
