Kauai Electric is a full-service electric utility that serves more than 30,000 customers on the island and County of Kauai in the State of Hawaii. The company provides four levels of basic service: residential, commercial, large power and street lighting. KE generates its own power from a 96 megawatt, diesel-fired power plant and purchases additional megawatts from Lihue Plantation. Approximately 6 percent of KE's power output is from renewable resources including bagasse, a sugar cane by-product, and hydropower. KE has contracted Kauai Power Partners to provide 26 mW of additional capacity using a naphtha-fired combustion turbine in 2002-3. The company is headquartered in Lihue, Hawaii, operates independent of any other electric utilities.
