My sister has a cat that needs a home, she is very sick and is going into a nursing home and can not take Patches (the cats name) with her. She has tried several times to call this place and left messages and they have not returned her calls. I find this to be very disappointing and unprofessional. I don't know if they except animals or not, but a return call would be nice to at least advise her where she could take Patches. This has caused her great stress as she loves her cat very much and it is heart breaking that she even has to consider giving her up. as I said these people are extremely unprofessional and I will add rude.

@42Melissa. I'm sorry to hear about your pup-- that's a tragedy. However, you appear to be confusing the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society with another organization. LAWS and Humane Society are different organizations. If you have any questions, or need help with a dog or cat in Leavenworth County, please contact LAWS at (913)651-5297.

Amazing

I saw the 1 star review below and knew that couldn't be right because of the AMAZING experience I have had with LAWS. I adopted a puppy from them who ended up needed surgery on her hips at 10 months old. Not only did they raise money to help with the bill, but LAWS matched it with their own funds! I was so impressed with them that I even began volunteering with them and did so for over a year. I am blessed with a healthy happy dog bc of them. I am forever grateful!!!!

Great Rescue

I'm writing this review partially in response to the review below, but mainly because of how great my experience adopting an animal from LAWS was. First, I think the reviewer below is mistaking LAWS for Leavenworth Animal Control, or Leavenworth Animal Shelter. LAWS is NOT either of those. LAWS is an animal rescue comprised of dedicated volunteers who pull as many dogs as they can from the kill shelters in the area, put them in foster and try to find loving homes.

I adopted a puppy from them four years ago. I saw his picture on petfinder and just knew I had to have him. I filled out an application for him, and was impressed with how quickly they responded and how professional they were. After meeting the puppy, I think it was clear to all of us that he would be a great match for me. The catch-I was interning in Kansas City, and it would be several weeks before I'd be able to take care of he puppy during the day. I figured it would be a deal breaker, but to my shock, his foster mother offered to take him during the day free of charge while I finished my internship. So for several weeks I dropped him off in the morning, and picked him up in the evenings-free of charge- and now, three years later, I've got a wonderfully behaved (and super spoiled) pooch, and I have LAWS to thank for that!

Not pet friendly

I called the humane society to pick up a puppy on my street, thinking it was more responsible than taking in another pet. The officer tranq'ed the puppy and he was dead before he reached the shelter.
