ASSERT is a nonprofit corporation serving northern Los Angeles and southern Kern counties in California. The corporation, based in Lancaster, Calif., offers a wide range of services for recovering substance abusers, economically disadvantaged, unemployed and handicapped people. It also provides various other services, such as weatherization and energy retrofit services for senior citizens and disabled individuals. The corporation s services are funded by direct assistance program of the Southern California Gas Company, and energy management assistance program of the Southern California Edison Company. It installs several measures in homes, including attic insulation, outlet plate gaskets and water heater blankets. ASSERT has placed more than 2,500 people into full-time employment, and served over 400 foster and at-risk youth. It has also served more than 20,000 economically disadvantaged people through its energy programs, and weatherized over 45,000 homes.
