The Washington State Department of Ecology is a public agency that is responsible for the protection and enhancement of environment. It promotes and manages air, land and water quality, as well as supports sustainable communities and natural resources. Additionally, the department is engaged in the cleanup and prevention of pollution. It provides environmental assessment, spill prevention, and hazardous waste and toxic reduction programs. The department also offers watershed planning, regulatory assistance, and shoreline, costal zone and floodplain management programs. It provides cleanup services for arsenic, lead, mercury, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and nuclear and pharmaceutical wastes. The department offers educational, technical assistance, permitting, regulatory law enforcement, environmental reviewing, and site identification and cleanup services. It provides grants and loans to public entities and commercial businesses. The Washington State Department of Ecology works in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency.
