The Mountain Conservation Trust of Georgia ( MCTGA ), a 501 ( c ) organization, is dedicated to the permanent conservation of the natural resources and scenic beauty of the mountains and foothills of North Georgia through land protection, collaborative partnerships, and education. MCTGA builds public and private partnerships that foster the long-term economic and environmental health of our North Georgia communities. We work with willing landowners to provide guidance and assistance to protect cultural and natural resources through the placement of a conservation easement. More than 1, 465 acres have been placed in permanent protection. The largest protected property is Burnt Mountain Preserve on Highway 136 East in Pickens County. The Preserve provides the community with a natural environment for hiking and passive recreation. This tract of land also protects the headwaters of the community's water supply as the natural forest filters water runoff and reduces potential sources of water pollution. In addition to providing land conservation services, MCTGA offers regular educational programs for the community. Informative seminars are provided by leaders in the field of conservation, and we also organize outdoor activities such as hikes, nature photography classes, and birding expeditions. These opportunities enable participants to enjoy the beauty of the natural world we enjoy in North Georgia.
