Doing business as Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television signed on the air on February 1, 1970, and quickly became a leader in the use of television for distance learning. The MPB television signal regularly reaches more than 2.5 million people. More than 150,000 Mississippians listen to MPB radio programming weekly. Children's programs constitute a major portion of the daytime and weekend morning schedule, comprising more than 45 percent of its total broadcast hours. MPB has provided more than 250 instructional television series to kindergarten through high school students and teachers statewide and provides workshops for teachers on the use of these tools to enhance student learning. The company provides interactive classroom video and audio interconnection to approximately 120 elementary, middle and high schools; nearly 30 community colleges; and more than 35 university sites with the Mississippi Interactive Video Network.
