Exorbitant Prices and Nasty Attitude:

I selected Dr. Weiner since he was the closest dentist listed in my dental plan when my general dentist advised a second opinion consultation. He looked in my mouth at only the one problem tooth, tooth #10, ordered an X-ray, refused to look at the X-ray that my general dentist had given me, looked again in my mouth , ordered another X-ray from a slightly different angle, looked at it, and said that he agreed with my general dentist. My total time in the dentist's chair was 14 minutes, I was with Dr. Weiner for about 5 minutes at most.

Upon leaving, the receptionist informed me that the bill was $131.25. This seemed exorbitant, so I asked if that included my dental plan discount, and she said it did. I gave the receptionist a credit card and asked for an itemized bill, since she only gave me the credit card receipt. I was in a hurry, so I did not look at the bill until I got home later in the day. It said "Exam, Xrays Consult #10, $131.25".

When I called the office a few times to re-request the itemized breakdown, I was given the runaround for a few days, even when I went back to the office in person, and was finally told, over the phone, that the one tooth consultation was $130, the first X-ray was $25 and the second X-ray was $20, a total of $175, less my 25% plan discount. When I mentioned that this seemed excessive, I was told to call and ask speak to Dr. Weiner, which I did. Dr. Weiner's attitude was extremely nasty; he said that those were his prices and told me several times to "let it go". I also never did get an explanation of why the X-rays, which I expected to be included in the service, were priced differently.

If you make the mistake of going to this dentist, my advice would be to check the prices for the expected services before you go, and proposed additional services after you are there; don't be afraid to say you want to think about it and leave, and do not expect to be treated with respect if you are in any way dissatisfied.

Leonard, thank you for the feedback on your recent visit. Patient satisfaction is our practice's top priority, so we would like to explore and explain this issue with you here a bit further. One might not always consider, that dentists, not unlike other healthcare professionals, are paid not only for "drilling" teeth but also for their expertise, their time and the cost of maintaining equipment, paying staff and providing a state of the art office facility. Equipment such as digital imaging and microscopes are expensive, but save our patients a lot of time while reducing exposure to radiation significantly. Your statement most accurately described the services we rendered to you on this appointment. The charges for this type of exam/consult appointment are generally bundled in this way as we are often guided by customary insurance fee practices, (an example of which is the reason why we reduce the charges for additional digital images after the first one). I am truly very sorry that you were dissatisfied but I can only imagine the disappointment you might have felt would we have undertaken to treat your tooth only to have it fail... I hope that this helps you in some way to understand the methods used in determining appropriate and fair fee structures in our specialty practice. We take these matters very seriously and encourage all our patients to request whatever information they need before, during and following endodontic treatment in our facility.
