Just across the bay from San Francisco sits the stately Icon at Park in historic Emeryville. This modern, urban existence is designed to perfectly reflect both where you are and where you're going. Both eclectic and exciting, Emeryville is a home base for the educated and the urbane. It's where art, science, and technology all get together at a coffee shop for a latte (soy, extra foam). It's where Pixar and biotech companies do their thing. And it's where you can get happily lost wandering around tree-lined streets, weekly farmer's markets, and local bookstores.

The staff is great. I loved living here.... at first. Then I witnessed the entire top floor move out because of Icon's aggressive rate hike. In many cases it's a 10-19% increase. (I'm paying an extra $600 a month) I excepted it as part of the economy coming back... even tho it was very extreme.

But then, this morning I was woken up at 7am to the sound of drilling by a construction crew into the side of the building (Might as well have been in my apartment - it was that loud!) We were told this would go on for 12 weeks. (but at 7am???) Yes I'd like a credit towards my rent for the 12 weeks we are dealing with the extra noise.

So if you'd like to live here, get used to moving trucks blocking the drive way, movers occupying the elevators and extreme rent increases.

Over Priced Apartments

I've been living at Icon for about a year now. I thought it would be a change in pace and quality of life, but I was wrong. The apartments at first sight appear to be luxurious, but when you've lived in them you'll see. There's cracks in the wall, rug imperfections, garbage pile ups, et cetera. One major thing that is not inviting is the noise outside. Aside from the ongoing construction, there's tons of people walking by at all hours of the night shouting and screaming. There was even a car chase one afternoon! With this, you can't even keep your windows open for fresh air (BTW, there's no air conditioning in the units. Just a fan that's quite noisy).

Really, for the price of the apartments, you can find better. I'm not impressed at all.

One positive thing: Anthony, the custodian, is very pleasant and works hard to keep the common areas clean.
