Great school, Great people.

This school is great. The students are dedicated to learning and creating a friendly, worthwhile atmosphere. The instructor, Sifu Don Walth is dedicated to each and every one of his students. His policies and expectations are the type of discipline and structure children need nowadays. He teaches because it is his passion and not because of money as stated in another review. This school has a lot to offer children. The Kung Fu classes have practical, real-world application. These classes also give the students a chance to challenge themselves, learn discipline and learn how to follow through with the things they do in life. There is an awesome instructor for tumbling (beginning/intermediate and advanced tumbling) who is absolutely amazing. She also coaches the acrobalance classes at this school. This is such an awesome school for children.

first rate

The only thing they can say is to make personal attacks on this man who is a genuine certified master and awarded by the state of Iowa and organizations for the service it provides. Parents don't have a problem and are very satisfied with the school program and instructors. If a student is not ready they are asked to wait. This is a possitive atmosphere and strives to keep it that way.

A Positive Experience

My 8 year old son started taking classes at the WDM location. He received a free week of lessons and a free uniform as part of a Grand Opening special. Initially, I stayed with my son for the entire class but eventually just dropped him off. My son received 1-1 instruction for 6 months as he was the only one enrolled at this location (occassionally students from DM location attended). Sifu was apologetic when he he had to close the WDM location due to lack of enrollment. We now attend the studio located off the back of his home. It is a longer drive, but the tuition is cheaper and the lessons are 15 minutes longer. Sifu is highly knowledgeable and skilled in the Martial Arts. He is successful at teaching students with different skill levels while still providing individual attention. Character, honor, and respect are an integral part of his training. My son's motor skills and endurance have improved and I have seen my son's self-confidence increase as a result of Sifu's teaching.

Good Work For Seven Years

I have attended this school since I was 14. I am female and have never had any trouble. Sifu's wife is usually home, and there are other students. In lessons I've had alone--due to bad weather--I never once felt uneasy. Before I decided on this school I checked out the others in town. In my opinion, Eagle Claw offers better all-round skills than Tae Kwan Do, and its system of grappling locks is more useful for defense. What drew me were the small classes and community atmosphere: we help each other and even have family-friendly parties. Many people are friends outside of class. Teachers emphasize life skills. It's "Iowan," you could say.Another thing I love is the flexibility. I can learn at my own pace and each person is valued for something. Many of the students are also artists. However, I must say that the style IS very rigorous; often those under 12 or so find it too difficult. However, if you are looking for tailored learning and a community, this is the place for you.

It's an honor to be a student.

For a traditional Kung Fu experience there is no substitute for Des Moines Eagle claw. To be accepted and taught by a master in his own home is the way Kung Fu has been taught for generations. Of course if you're uncomfortable with training in his home he also teaches at several more professional locations. Individual training is very emphasized at the school. You are expected to be shown a movement and practice it until you understand it, at which point you will be shown more. While the instructor may not always be able to give his full attention to each individual(there are typically 5-10 people of vastly differing skill levels in a class) the more advanced students are always willing to answer any question you may have. If you're looking for just a fitness class where everyone does everything in unison or a babysitter this probably isn't the place for you. However, if you're looking for instruction in an ancient tradition of life and combat then this is the only place around to go.

Disappointing is an understatement

First off, this address is this guy's personal house. Who really wants to drop off their children at some random guy's house. It was acceptable for me. My children had one lesson with him and it was not what it was cracked up to be. The instructor is extremely forgetful and easily distracted. I felt like he was wasting my children's time and not using the time as efficiently as he could have. Don't go here.

Crap.

This place looks interesting when you read about online but it's not what the owner thinks it is. First off, his main "school" is in his HOUSE. That is extremely disconcerting when you drop off children to take classes there. He does have other places he teaches but they cost more and he's only there a small fraction of the time. The house does not have nearly enough room to work out in so he added a garage for the students to work out in. That is completely unacceptable to me as a mother. What happens when one of his cars is leaking gasoline or oil? It is not okay for a business to expect children to breath in gas fumes and work out in a garage. If he does not want to teach, he will purposely waste your time and money. I think it's absolutely unacceptable. Not only will he waste your time and money, he is extremely prone to getting distracted and becomes highly unfocused. To top off everything, he only cares about MONEY. He does not care if there are problems in the school. His
