The 97 million-gallon-per-day Des Moines Water Reclamation Facility features an aeration system that consists of six adjacent aeration tanks. Each tank is divided into four phases called basins. Each basin is 300 feet in length, 35 feet wide and 20 feet deep. Wastewater is treated and disinfected at the facility before being reintroduced to the environment in order to prevent diseases, such as typhoid and paratyphoid fever, dysentery and cholera. The Des Moines WRF also offers analytical services for testing water and wastewater for alkalinity, cyanide, hardness, mercury and other agents; boisolids for ammonia, density and nitrates; and soils for ammonia, conductivity, metals and phosphate.
